What is Gundam and what is a “model kit”?

Gundam is a Japanese saga about giant robots (mecha). Bandai’s model kits (called Gunpla) come on plastic runners. No glue required thanks to snap-fit engineering and color-molded plastic. Painting is optional; just cut, snap, and apply stickers or water-slide decals for a great result.

Instructions are universal (step-by-step diagrams). Each part is identified by a letter (sprue) and a number (part), e.g., A12.

Tools: must-haves, nice-to-haves, and what to avoid

Must-haves Nice-to-haves (finish) Avoid at first
• Fine side cutters (nippers)
• Sanding stick/sponge (400–1000)
• Tweezers (for small stickers)
• Cutting mat or rigid cardboard
• Panel-lining marker (black/grey/brown)
• Precision hobby knife (for fine nubs)
• Cotton swabs & isopropyl alcohol
• Spray clear coat (matte/satin) outdoors
• Strong glues (not needed)
• Harsh solvents without experience
• Paints/laquers on your very first kit

Safety: always cut away from your hand; ventilate when using sprays; keep small parts away from children and pets.

Grade guide (what to expect & who we recommend it for)

HG – High Grade (1/144)

Perfect for beginners. Color plastic, fewer tiny pieces, solid articulation, and a massive catalog. Tip: if unsure, start with an HG design you love.

RG – Real Grade (1/144)

“MG-like” detail in HG size. More tiny parts, technical markings, and often an inner frame. Recommended after 1–2 HGs. Patience and tweezers help.

MG – Master Grade (1/100)

Larger size with internal structure and lots of posing options. Takes time; looks stunning even unpainted. A great weekend project after HG/RG.

SD – Super Deformed

Chibi proportions, very quick builds, charming on a desk/shelf. Sub-lines (SDCS, SDEX, MGSD) offer varied detail levels.

Mega Size (1/48)

Towering height but engineered to be simple. Measure your shelf before buying.

Other / special grades

In Others you’ll find Entry Grade (very simple), MGEX (effects/LEDs), Full Mechanics, MGSD and more.

What to buy by profile

  • Easiest first step: HG or SD.
  • Love fine details & markings: RG.
  • Want a “display piece”: MG or Mega Size.
  • Want to customize and mix parts: 30MM / 30MS.

Your first project, step-by-step (quick summary)

  1. Prep the area: good lighting, cutting mat, and a parts tray.
  2. Read the manual: identify runners (A, B, C…) and the first sub-step (torso/head).
  3. Two-stage cuts: first cut leaves 2–3 mm; second cut flush to avoid stress whitening.
  4. Gentle cleanup: use the sanding sponge to remove nubs.
  5. Dry-fit, then snap: test the fit before pressing until it clicks.
  6. Stickers/decals: use tweezers; for water-slides, place with a damp swab.
  7. Panel lining (optional): highlight lines with a fine marker; clean with a lightly moistened swab.
  8. Clear coat (optional): a matte layer protects and unifies. Spray outdoors and at distance.

Stickers vs water-slide decals?

Stickers are quick and easy; water-slides are thinner and more realistic but require practice.

What age are they for?

They are model kits, not toys. Recommended for teens and adults. For minors, always with supervision.
