Gundam (Gunpla): what they are and how model kits work

Gundam is an iconic Japanese mecha franchise, and Gunpla are its official plastic model kits. Each kit includes parts on runners, joints and accessories so you can build a poseable mobile suit with a display-ready finish.

How model kits work

• Snap-fit assembly: parts press together—no glue required. Painting is optional.
• Grades & difficulty: EG/HG (beginner, 1/144), RG (advanced detail 1/144), MG (inner frame 1/100), PG (ultimate detail 1/60).
• Basic tools: nippers, hobby knife/files for nub cleanup, optional panel lining markers and stickers.
• Articulation & customization: dynamic posing, swappable hands/weapons, upgrade with panel lines, decals and paint.

Which kit should I start with?

• First build: EG or HG 1/144 for quick assembly.
• More detail without painting: RG 1/144 or MG 1/100.
• Premium collecting: PG 1/60.
